"Joseph's Midnight Party" is an AI-generated film that follows Joseph, a young man trapped in despair and dependency on medication and alcohol. Amid a surreal summer journey, he seeks escape from his troubled life.
This work reflects both a generation's struggles and a critique of our technology-driven era.
Artistic Motivation:
-
About the World We Live In: This work observes the life circumstances of the post-90s generation. Our cultural life and identity are inseparable from the internet and media, with online gaming and constant information bombardment creating a seductive pull, like a form of spiritual opium. Truth becomes difficult to discern, and the world we inhabit is gradually turning into an absurd playground.
-
Exploration of Dreams: This absurd playground is composed of various visual symbols from dreams and reality. Experiences from daily life stimulate and alter Joseph's subconscious. There are two distinct dream sequences in the film: one set in the desert, and another with the airplane scene at the end. Throughout the rest of the film, the blending and interweaving of dreams and reality create a surreal sensory experience, reflecting Joseph’s perception and mental state under addiction to substances and alcohol.
-
Sources of Inspiration: The work is deeply influenced by existentialist literature and media ecology. Much like Meursault from Camus' The Stranger or Gregor in The Metamorphosis, Joseph lives in an absurd world where he cannot resist his own suffering or the bombardment of external information. Despite this, he still tries to change, escape, and reflect on his situation. The film's critique of media is influenced by Neil Postman’s media ecology theories.
Additionally, certain aspects of the work are drawn from my own personal experiences, such as a past addiction to video games and the impact of growing up in China during the rise of television, where advertising was pervasive. The theme of elections reflects my critique of political spectacles, where the world seems like a grand show, and we are both its audience and its victims.
